The failed attempt on the Kautz Glacier in 2009 had been weighing on my mind for some time and the mere mention Mt. Rainier made me grunt from disappointment. I knew that I had to go back at some point and so in early 2013, I somehow convinced my wife Ruby to let me go for a quick trip while she took care of the kids. While the Kautz Glacier route offered a more unique experience, I opted to go for the standard Muir route to hopefully ensure a successful summit bid. By the time I looked on the Alpine Ascents webpage for open dates, however, I found that not only had every 3-day Muir trip been booked, but there was a waiting list. Finally, by mid-April, a good timeslot had become available and I was set for a July 13-15 trip.
